William-An Englishman is a wonderfully written book. It is a very simple story, but an extremely powerful one. The story is about William at the time of WW1. The book can be divided into three sections; William, before encountering reality, William encountering reality and what William does after encountering reality. Cicely Hamilton begins her story in a light satirical style. It is very amusing to read. In after thought it seems like this is bait that Cicely Hamilton has cast out to the reader. Because there is a hook attached. Cicely Hamilton, changes style, rips us out of our complacency, and drops us and William in WW1. The transition is brutal and very effective. The book, written 80 years ago takes on dogmas and wars. The dogmas that want to save mankind and the wars that don`t. This is a book that is still relevant. It is a Lord Of The Flies type of book, with adults as main characters instead of children. Persephone Books republishes forgotten treasures written by women. William-An Englishmen is a wonderful book. I am looking forward to reading their other gems. Persephone Books can be reached at www.persephonebooks.co.uk . |
